The president’s regional advisory boards at CMU were created as one of many
efforts to reach out to university constituents in five areas of the
state—Mount Pleasant, Metro Detroit, West Michigan, Northern Michigan,
and the Tri-Cities. They provided an informal network for communicating
on major issues and a source for feedback on the general state of the
university and specific projects and activities. When the advisory boards
were first instituted, they were done so with a five year time frame in
mind. Most members now feel comfortable contacting President Rao or a
member of his team directly with suggestions or concerns and many, if not
most, are also involved with CMU in other affinity groups (such as the
development board, alumni association, college advisory boards, etc).
For these reasons, the formal advisory boards have been disbanded with thanks
from the president to everyone who has served on them since their inception.
